Thiruvananthapuram, May 20: In a brave act, a 23-year-old law student in Kerala chopped off the genitals of a 54-year-old self-styled godman who had allegedly been raping her since she was a minor. Reportedly, the accused has been identified as Swamy Gangeshananda, a member of the Kollam-based Panmana Ashram.
As per the police complaint filed by the woman, Gangeshananda had been raping the victim at her home for the last eight years. The woman said he first raped her when she was 16 years old, claims a CNN-News18 report.
Applauding the girl’s step of chopping off man’s genitals for allegedly trying to rape her, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday said it is a courageous step.“It was a courageous step. No doubt about it,” Vijayan told the media here.
The girl took the law in her hands on Friday night when the accused tried to rape her again at her home. In a bid to teach the accused a lesson, the woman grabbed a sharp object and chopped off his genitals and reportedly called the police herself.
The CNN-News18 report further states that the accused was rushed to the Trivandrum Medical College where an emergency surgery was performed. According to the hospital officials, 90 per cent of his penis was cut off and was not in a position to be re-attached. He was admitted to the hospital at 12.39 am on Saturday. “Plastic surgeons who are urology experts in the hospital did emergency surgery to stop the blood loss and to enable him to pass urine,” a statement by the hospital reportedly said.
He has been booked under Section 376 (Rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO).
If reports in local media are to be believed, the girl’s mother has also been detained as she knew about the crime but never reported it. In the police complaint, the girl has also accused the godman of sexually assaulting her mother. Reportedly, the girl’s family is a follower of the ashram.
When contacted by CNN-News18, the Panmana Ashram said, “The Swamy had left the ashram 15 years ago after completing his studies.”
