New Delhi, Sept 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Kerala on Saturday to attend the National Executive meeting of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The high-level meet of the party is being organized in Kozhikode. While Modi is expected give the valedictory speech in Kozhikode tomorrow, he is scheduled to address a public rally at Calicut beach today. The public meeting is expected to be attended by hundreds of BJP party workers, volunteers and supporters. This is the first public meeting rally being addressed by Narendra Modi in the aftermath of the gruesome cross-border terror attack in Uri which left 18 soldiers dead.

Analysts are firm that Modi would address the nation on Uri terror attack through the public meeting. The Prime Minister is yet to address the nation directly in the aftermath of the gruesome assault against the Indian forces. The BJP National Executive Meeting is also centred around two crucial issues – national security and eradication of poverty. Senior BJP functionaries are part of the high-level meeting. Apart from Modi, another keynote speaker at the meeting is BJP President Amit Shah.

While the previous BJP National Executive meeting was held in Allahabad, pollsters were surprised by the decision of the saffron party to organize the meeting in Kerala. However, political analysts claim that BJP is eyeing long-term investment in Kerala, and is aiming to boost the morale of its cadres and leaders in the state, who are gradually gaining prominence. Another reason for choosing Kozhikode is the history shared by Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the predecessor of BJP in Kerala. BJP ideologue Deendayal Upadhyaya was sworn is as the President of Bharatiya Jana Sangh in Kozhikode.

BJP has decided to honour nearly 5,000 workers of the party’s Kerala unit, who are associated with the outfit since the Jana Sangh era. Ever since the impressive increase in the voteshare of BJP in 2016 assembly elections in Kerala, the party has pitched up efforts to increase its electoral base in the state. Apart from BJP, the activities of its ideological parent Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has rapidly escalated in the state.

The polity of Kerala is mainly dominated by left-wing outfits. With both LDF and UDF choosing the left-off-Centre stance, BJP pins hope to offer an alternative to the people through their right-wing nationalist politics.

In the recently conducted Kerala Assembly Elections, the voteshare of BJP rose to above 10 per cent, while the party also succeeded in winning one seat. Veteran politician O Rajagopalan was elected from Nemom constituency.
