Maharashtra Corporation Elections 2017: 56 per cent voting recorded across 10 municipal bodies
LIVE - Maharashtra Corporation Elections 2017 Polling: BMC, TMC, PMC, NMC and seven other municipal corporations contested today.
Mumbai, Feb 21: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), along with nine other nine municipal corporations goes to polls today. India.com is running live news updates on BMC elections starting today. The municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra bear special political significance as many people in the political spectrum are seeing these elections as semi-final to Maharashtra assembly elections in 2019. Along with the municipal corporations in Mumbai, elections would also be be held in the civic bodies of Pune (PMC), Nashik (NMC), Thane (TMC), Ulhasnagar, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur and Amravati.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which ruled six of the municipal corporations in alliance with Shiv Sena, decided to go alone in upcoming elections. The party snapped its 25-year electoral alliance with Shiv Sena. However, the municipality elections are also seen by Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to reclaim power in the state. Currently, Congress-NCP coalition is ruling four municipal corporations including Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur and Amravati corporations. However, both the parties have not formed an alliance to contest other corporations under a united banner.
Mumbai also witnessed a bitter exchange of words between warring parties. Shiv Sena deputy chief Uddhav Thackeray accused National Democratic Alliance of unleashing an anti-people measure like demonetisation. The battle hit a new low when he called Devendra Fadnavis a Chief Minister of “goons”. Responding to the charges levelled against him, Chief Minister accused Shiv Sena of large scale corruption in BMC. He alleged that its former electoral partner siphoned off the funds by submitting dubious documents.
Many political observers have said that the mandate of municipal corporation elections should be seen in the light of major steps of the Central government including demonetisation. Apart from BMC, nine other municipal corporations are going to polls.
