Mumbai, Apr 10: At least 17 persons including children were killed and 13 injured after a major accident took place near Khandala on Pune-Satara highway in the early hours of Tuesday. The fatal mishap happened when a truck travelling from Bijapur, Karnataka to Shirwal near Pune veered off the road and crashed near Khambatki tunnel. The truck was carrying around 35 labourers.

According to Assistant Inspector Yuvraj Hande of Pargaon-Khandala police station, the driver of the truck may have lost control which led to the accident. “We suspect the driver to have lost control due to high speed and the curved slope on this S-shaped patch on Mumbai-Bengaluru highway. Seventeen persons including children are dead,” he was quoted as saying.

Reports suggested the truck carrying construction work equipment was overloaded and speeding when hit the barricade. The deceased were mostly construction workers.
