Manipur: 21 dead in landslide; flood declared by state government

Imphal, August 1: Around 21 people are reportedly dead due to a landslide in Khenjoy district of Manipur. The village is situated along the Indo-Myanmar border. The landslide is suspected to be caused by extremely stormy weather surfacing in the mountainous state since the past few days.


Manipur has been devastated with constant heavy rainfall. The incessant downpour have caused flood in major parts of the state. The rivers flowing through the state have crossed the danger mark. The state government issued high alert earlier in the day and has began evacuating those stranded in the floods. Relief operations are carried out at a slow pace since the state has been cut-off from the neighboring regions owing to the floods. Various bridges connecting Manipur internally has been washed off. The main highway NH-37 which connects Manipur with Mozoram and Tripura has turned dysfunctional.
