New Delhi, Sept 16: Indian Air Force Marshal Arjan Singh died after suffering cardiac arrest on Saturday. He breathed his last at the Army R&R Hospital here in the national capital.

The 98-year-old was the only officer in the history of armed forces who was promoted to the five-star rank, equivalent to the Field Marshal. His demise came as a major moment of grief for the nation. Here is how the influential voices reacted:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi: “India mourns the unfortunate demise of Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh. We remember his outstanding service to the nation. Marshal of the IAF Arjan Singh’s determined focus on capacity building in the IAF added great strength to our defence capabilities. India will never forget the excellent leadership of Marshal of the IAF Arjan Singh in 1965, when the IAF saw substantial action,” he said in series of tweets.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman: “Marshal Arjan Singh led a very exemplary life. At the age of 44, he was elevated to the rank of Chief of Air Force. He retired in 1970, but he continued in public life till the past few months. His mere conduct showed his nationalism. His life would remain a source of inspiration for generations to come.”
