Happy Birthday Mayawati: BSP Supremo calls for low-key celebration in view of demonetisation, UP polls
The bash will be markedly different from the pomp and show that is usually put on every year.
Uttar Pradesh, January 15: Bahujan Samaj Party Supremo, Mayawati will mark her 61st birthday today with a low-key celebration. As a result of the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, that are set to place in a few days, the celebrations will follow the model code of conduct put in place by the Election Commission.
The bash will be markedly different from the pomp and show that is usually put on every year. The small celebrations will involve a cake cutting ceremony in all the 403 constituencies across Uttar Pradesh. The party usually launches fundraisers before the iron lady of Uttar Pradesh’s birthday and funds are collected which are then handed over to Mayawati herself. tradition is to launch fundraising campaigns across the state to collect money which is then handed to the BSP chief on her birthday. The amount, which runs into crores of rupees, is then utilised for campaigning for the party.
The net amount runs into crores of rupees and is used to increase the party’s reach in the state. In a rather infamous incident, the money was handed to Mayawati on her birthday a couple of years ago, in the form of a garland worth crores of rupees.
However, in view of the party’s staunch protest against demonetisation, Mayawati has given out clear message to party workers to not accept cash from donors. Speaking to TOI, a BSP regional co-ordinator reportedly said, “The party has opposed demonetisation strongly and it will drive home the message better by not accepting donation from supporters. Celebrations will be the party’s internal affair, but we cannot stop supporters from attending the function.”
Addressing a briefing today, Mayawati said, “I appeal my party workers to celebrate my birthday with simplicity by doing welfare of the needy and underprivileged. It’s been over 50 days post demonetisation and yet PM has not said how much black money has been recovered.”
She added, “BJP should be ready to face the consequences of their decision in UP polls that has rendered 90% of ppl ‘kangaal’.’ Commenting on the pight of the social class she belongs to, Mayawati said, “Merely condoling or condemning incidents of crime against Dalits won’t help, they demand equality guaranteed under our Constitution.”
Further, the model code of conduct prevents party workers fro distributing goods as gifts to the poor. In the past, the BSP has given out rickshaws, cycles, quilts and sarees in a bid to gain popularity among the masses. Mayawati will spend the day till noon at Lucknow, where she will meet well-wishers and participate in a low-key cake cutting ceremony. She will then depart to Delhi where she will engage with BSP workers from across the country.
The party on its behalf, will launch its first social media campaign on the occasion of the Supremo’s birthday. The online campaign will be titled “Behenji ko aane do” and will rival Akhilesh Yadav’s campaign “Kaam bolta hai” and the BJP campaign, “Na gundaraj, na bhrashtachar, abki bar BJP sarkar”. Mayawati will also launch a blue book chronicling her’s and the party’s history thus far.
