MCD Bypoll Election Results 2017: AAP wins Maujpur seat, Congress bags Sarai Pipal Thala
The bye-election results of the two wards - Maujpur and Sarai Pipal - of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have been declared.
New Delhi, May 23: The bye-election results of the two wards – Maujpur and Sarai Pipal Thala- of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have been declared. While the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the Maujpur seat in the MCD bypoll, Congress bagged Sarai Pipal Thala ward. Polling in Maujpur and Sarai Pipal wards was held on May 14 and May 21 respectively. Municipal elections to the two wards of the MCD were postponed due to the death of two candidates.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Reshma won the MCD bypoll from Maujpur seat. She won the Maujpur seat by 600 votes. Congress came at second here. In Sarai Pipal Thala ward, Congress candidate Mukesh Goel won the bye-election by 3000 votes. Notably, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that won 181 of the 270 wards to which polls were held on Sunday, April 23, came at third place in both Maujpur and Sarai Pipal Thala wards. BJP candidate lost deposit on Maujpur seat.
On April 26 when the MCD election results were declared, the BJP won a total of 181 of the 270 wards. The AAP came a distant second with 48 wards while a resurgent Congress made significant gains in pockets and won 30 seats.
The erstwhile unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi was trifurcated into North, South and East Delhi Municipal Corporations in 2012. Out of the total 272 wards, the NDMC and the SDMC have 104 seats each while the EDMC has 64. The MCD has been ruled by the BJP for the last 10 years.
