Modi in US: H-1B visa restrictions likely to feature in discussion with Donald Trump

New Delhi, June 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump will meet today in Washington. Apart from issues like terrorism emanating from Pakistan, the terror situation in Afganistan-Pakistan region, and defence partnership; H-1B visa restrictions proposed by the Donald Trump administration might come up in discussion between the two leaders of the two biggest democracies in the world.

The Indian IT industry is expecting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will raise its concerns that restrictions on visa might adversely impact India-US IT relationship. The move can hurt the relationship between the IT sectors of the two countries.  However, it is not much expected that Donald Trump will be too receptive to Indian concerns and commit to bringing relief to the Indian companies.

The Donald Trump administration is trying to impose more restrictions on importing skilled talent from other countries to save American jobs to fulfill his commitment to building new America using American hands. One of the major restriction is doubling the minimum salary offered to a mid-level H-1B worker. The Financial Times reported that Nasscom says Indian companies are not the biggest recipients of H-1B visas. The industry body says that Indian IT companies just get 20% of the total visas. Indian IT industry gets 60% of its business from the United States.

Nasscom President R Chandrashekhar told FE that the US administration has not changed the rules yet. He said that the industry would be looking at strengthening the relationship between the two industries.

Meanwhile, Indian industry is geared up to meet the challenges thrown up by the new conservative regime in the United States. According to reports, Indian IT majors are hiring native talent there. Infosys would hire 10,000 Americans. Wipro will hire 50% of native talent in the United States.

Modi and Trump will meet at 3 pm local time (1 am IST). A meeting between delegations will follow.
