Mulayam Singh Yadav to hold meeting with Samajwadi Party leaders today; will Netaji sack Akhilesh Yadav?

Lucknow, Oct 24: Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Monday will hold a meeting of party MPs, MLAs, MLCs and party senior leaders to discuss the future course of action, a day after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav sacked uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav along with Narad Rai, Om Prakash and Shadab Fatima from the Cabinet. Mulayam Singh Yadav, who is facing the worst crisis of his political career, is expected to take tough decision in the meeting with party leaders. According to reports, Mulayam Singh Yadav may sack his son Akhilesh Yadav from Samajwadi Party. While Akhilesh Yadav will attend the meeting called by his father, expelled MP Ram Gopal Yadav and Rajya Sabha member Amar Singh have not been invited.

The SP is already in talks with Congress, RLD, JD(U) and smaller parties in order to prove majority in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly if Akhilesh Yadav resigns along with his supporters. According to reports, senior Samajwadi Party leaders are planning to outline a Bihar-style Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) to fight the forthcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh. Several powerful old socialists leaders now want Mulayam Singh Yadav to replace Akhilesh Yadav as Chief Minister as well as lead the party in the election. On the other hand, Akhilesh Yadav seems adamant on going alone in the polls. Mulayam Singh Yadav’s supporters claim Akhilesh’s faction has also prepared posters and hoardings without Mulayam or Shivpal’s photos. Samajwadi Party is on the verge of split as two power centres of Akhilesh and Shivpal can’t continue together for long.

The internal fight between factions of Akhilesh Yadav and current SP chief Shivpal Singh Yadav intensified on Sunday when the Chief Minister ousted his uncle and three others from the government. Hours after Mulayam Singh Yadav hit back  sacking Akhilesh’s backer and MP Ram Gopal Yadav from the party for six years. To discuss the crisis, Mulayam called an emergency meeting of senior party leaders last night, however the Samajwadi Party leaders couldn’t reach to consensus. It is expected Mulayam in today’s meeting will take some tough decision to douse the fires in the party he founded some 25 years ago. Akhilesh Yadav, 43, describing himself as the political successor to his father Mulayam Singh, has been dismissing speculations that he wanted to split the Samajwadi Party which, he said, belonged to “Netaji” – as Mulayam Singh is widely known. The Chief Minister also said he would attend the party’s Silver Jubilee function on November 5. However SP insiders claim all efforts to bring peace in the party were effectively over now and that the party may he headed for a vertical split between the two generations.
