Mumbai: World Bank CEO Kristalina Georgieva travels in local train

World Bank CEO Kristalina Georgieva will hold discussions with Arun Jaitley, and other key policy-makers. She will also scehduled to meet Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis and RBI Governor Urjit Patel.

Mumbai, Feb 28: World Bank Chief Executive Officer Kristalina Georgieva on Tuesday stunned Mumbaikars as she traveled in Mumbai local train from Churchgate to Dadar to inspect Mumbai’s lifeline. Georgieva, who is on a two-day visit to India, reached Mumbai on Tuesday morning and posed for a picture with her local train ticket. This is Kristalina Georgieva’s maiden visit to India. She is accompanied by World Bank South Asia vice-president Annete Dixon and country director Junaid Ahmad. Georgieva’s first visit to Mumbai will give her a brief understanding of how operations of the World Bank- supported suburban rail system which carries about eight million commuters each day, is serving a fast growing and urbanizing India.

Georgieva will meet with senior leaders at a time when the India’s economic growth is one of the bright spots in the global economy, an official press release said. Georgieva said, “India is our biggest middle-income client”.  “Its economic growth influences global growth. Its achievements in health and education contribute to the world achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. I am keen to learn more as India is a laboratory for the world to learn about what works in development and to find new ways to collaborate.”, she was quoted in a World Bank press release.

The World Bank CEO will hold discussions with the Union Minister of Finance Arun Jaitley, and other key policy-makers. She is also scheduled to meet with Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra and the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Urjit Patel. Georgieva is also scheduled to visit New Delhi to discuss the possibilities of initiating a new process to resolve dispute between India and Pakistan over the Indus Water Treaty, Indian Express reported. Indian and Pakistan had locked horns over a fight over two hydroelectric projects India is building in Jammu and Kashmir over Kishenganga and Chenab rivers.

During her stay in Mumbai, Georgieva is scheduled to visit a school serving low-income households, and children with special needs. It is a part of the Government of India’s Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan program, supported by the World Bank to see how Mumbai’s administrators are striving to ensure that basic services are delivered to all residents of the city, one-third of whom live in slums.
