Nagpur, Oct 12: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Sandeep Gavai won the by-election in Manish Nagar-Narendra Nagar ward 35-A of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). Sandeep Gavai defeated Congress’ Pankaj Thorat. The ward no 35-A seat of NMC fell vacant after the demise of the first-time corporator Nilesh Kumbhare. Kumbhare contested elections on the ticket of Republican Party of India (RPI) with support from BJP.
Sandeep Gavai had won the NMC election in 2007. In the 2012 election, he was defeated by NCP’s Prakash Gajbhiye. Gavai had also fought MLA’s election from Umred as well as MLC poll from Bhandara-Gondia but lost both the elections. Gavai, who is not a resident of ward 35-A, is close to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. He was not given ticket in the last election.
An abysmal 24.33 per cent polling was recorded during the by-election of Manish Nagar-Narendra Nagar ward 35-A of NMC. Of the total 57,693 voters, just 14,035 turned up to exercise their franchise. Eight contestants were in the fray. They included Sandip Gavai (BJP), Pankaj Thorat (Congress), Nanda Zodape (BSP), Vandana Jivne (RPI). Besides these, Shashikant Narnawane, Manoj Ingole, Sunil Kamade and Gautam Komde.
