Nagpur Municipal Corporation Elections Results 2017 Live News Updates: BJP leads in 51 seats, Congress leads in 17 seats, NCP in 1

Maharashtra, February 22: The results of the closely contested Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections are expected to be announced today by the Maharashtra State election Commission after the counting of votes concludes. While polls were held across 10 Municipal Corporations and 26 Zilla Parishads of Maharashtra, the NMC elections are particularly important because of the fact that the area is Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ home turf.

As such, it is expected that the Bharatiya Janata Party will obtain stellar support from the residents of Nagpur. According to the Zee 24 Taas Exit poll prediction, the BJP is expected to win in Nagpur, with nearly 84-87 seats. The closest opposition is expected to come from Congress with a mere, 34-36 seats. Meanwhile, the exit polls showed   Shiv Sena getting 4-6 seats, NCP getting 4-6 seats, BSP getting 12-15 seats and Others getting 10-15 seats.

Similarly, the Axis- My India exit polls survey too showed the BJP securing a massive win. The pollster has predicted that the BJP would win 98-110 seats, followed by Congress winning 35-41 seats. However, the Shiv Sena is expected to secure only 2-4 seats despite the extensive campaigning.

The results for the BJP are expected to be much better than their performance in 2012 when the BJP-Sena alliance government won 68 seats out of the 145 seats. Apart from the fact that Nagpur serves as the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s home turf, the city is also considered the focal point of the BJP ideologue, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s activities.

The RSS Chief, Mohan Bhagwat, too participated in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation Elections and cast his vote at a polling booth in Bharat Mahila Vidyalaya in the city. On the other hand, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, his wife and mother cast their vote in Nagpur’s Dharampeth area. Union Minister for transportation, Nitin Gadkari, too had his political voice heard in the NMC polls.

The voting percentage in the city, however, remained quite low. With a voter turnout of only 53 percent, the net number of people who polled was much lesser than the expected seventy percent. The number remained quite similar to the last municipal corporation elections in 2012, wherein a voter turnout of 52 percent was recorded.

The NMC elections will decide on representatives for 145 wards in the city. Over 1.95 crore voters would have decided the fate of those contesting the municipal corporation elections, while, over 1.80 crore people would have exercised their franchise to determine the results Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti polls. This would also include the results of the cash-rich Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections 2017. Stay with us as we bring to you live news updates of the results in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation eletions.
