Najeeb Ahmad remains untraced: Confined JNU Vice Chancellor says 'gheraoing' is 'unfortunate and illegal'

New Delhi, October 20: The Vice Chancellor of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, M Jagadesh Kumar, on Thursday said that what the students were doing was “unfortunate and illegal.” Speaking to ANI, Kumar said that students have confined him and other staff, except the diabetes registrar, since 2.30 pm yesterday. Narrating the staff’s woes, he said that he along with his staff has had to sleep on the floor and go without food, for the past 15 hours, due to the confinement. Students  of the University, laid siege on the administrative building, demanding that missing first year MSc student Najeeb Ahmad be traced. The siege has been going on for over 15 hours now, with the students refusing to relent, or listen to the pleas of the authorities.

“We are also concerned that Najeeb Ahmad is missing, have talked to police also but gheraoing me and other officials is wrong”, Vice Chancellor M Jagdesh Kumar told ANI. “We have been ghreraoed since 2.30 pm yesterday. We had to sleep on floor. We had no food to eat. Students are not allowing even wives of officials to meet”, he added. He had met the students yesterday at around 12.15am at the gate of his office, when he had requested them to stop agitating and let the officials go, but to no avail. At around 1.30 am, Kumar had tweeted, , “Since the students did not let us go home inspite our appeal, we have no other option but be confined to the administration building.”

He posted another tweet at around 2.30 am, saying, “Agitating students should realize it is wrong to physically confine their own teachers like this. This will affect our JNU.” Another one of his tweet read,  “We tried to go out of admin building at 2.20 am. Agitating students did not let us go out.” As of now, the students wish to continue the agitation. Former JNUSU President, Akbar Choudhary told the Times of India, “There are two more demands which they agreed downstairs but refuse to give in writing. One, the VC should file a fresh complaint with the Delhi police and second, all the people involved in the episode of violence should be out of bound from the hostel, for a free and fair enquiry, till the enquiry is pending”, adding, “Also, the appeal they gave remained unsigned.” ALSO READ: Protesting JNU students confine V-C, senior officials in campus

Najeeb Ahmad has been missing for the past six days and there is still not sign of him anywhere, nor does any one have any information of his whereabouts. Ahmad had got into an altercation with Akhil Bharatoya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists on October 14 during a mess election campaign at Mahi-Mandvi hostel. He has been missing from the next day. According to some students, Ahmad left his phone, wallet and even his footwear in his hostel room.
