Narendra Modi 'divisive manipulator': Journalist Pankaj Mishra exposes sinister plot of Hindutva forces

New Delhi, November 9: Even as voices protesting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, grew louder in the United Kingdom, the British media has also started capturing some of those voices. The British national daily newspaper The Guardian, which is renowned the world over for its impeccable standards of journalism, published an article on Modi, berating him for playing divisive politics in India and playing a world leader, while chaos breaks out in his own country. The article has been written by Indian journalist Pankaj Mishra and is an uncompromising no-holds-barred piece on the current situation in India.

Mishra’s article, titled “Narendra Modi: the divisive manipulator who charmed the world”, laid bare the hypocrisy that underlies Modi’s agenda as a prime minister. He says that while Modi prepares to visit the UK to strengthen economic ties with the country, there is unrest and protest brewing back home, with incidents of religious hatred making it to prime time news every other day. The article mentions all the recent happenings of the country, including the recent March of India, which was to emphasise that India is tolerant, but which itself turned out to be a vicious attack on tolerance. Mishra speaks of “Hindu supremacists”, which we refer to as Hindutva supporters back home, who are targeting intellectuals and minority communities in the country. Mishra has presented a brutally honest picture of the current scenario in India and has slammed the prime minister for his silence on all the burning issues, while focussing all his attention on international relations and economic growth. Right from the Gujarat 2002 riots, to the murder of intellectuals like Govind Pansare and MM Kalburgi, to the attacks on and killings of beef eating minorities, Mishra exposes a sinister plot that aims at establishing a Hindu supremacy that he says will weaken “India’s already enfeebled democratic institutions and pluralist traditions”.
