Narendra Modi in US: What all has happened on Day 1; what to expect today

Washington: Prime Minister Narendra Modi who arrived in the US capital yesterday in the second leg of his three-nation tour had busy schedule on first day. Modi held a round table meeting with 21 top executives of American companies. Among those who attended were Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Mastercard President Ajay Banga.

Later in the day, he addressed the Indian diaspora in Virginia and talked about terrorism, counter-terrorism, surgical strikes and how the Ministry of External Affairs in India has brought a change in the lives of Indians across the globe.

PM Narendra Modi met 20 top American CEOs: 

Prime Minister Modi met and interacted with 20 top American CEOs at a roundtable meeting in Washington D.C.and discussed about slew of issues which includes Make in India, Goods and Services Tax (GST), India’s economy, technology, Digital India, Skill Development, Demonetisation and the thrust towards renewable energy among others.

Speaking about the Goods and Service Tax (GST), the Prime Minister said that this is becoming a reality after years of effort. “Its (GST) implementation is a complex task that may well be the subject of future case-studies. This shows India can take big decisions and implement them swiftly,” PM asserted.

According to the reports of ANI, Prime Minister Modi sought enhanced attention from the CEOs in areas such as women empowerment, renewable energy, startups and innovation. He suggested linking sanitary practices, products and technologies with the requirements of school going girls. He reiterated that his primary interest is improving the quality of life in India.

Modi addressed Indian diaspora in Virginia: 

Interacting with Indian diaspora yesterday, Narendra Modi said that his government has emerged corruption-free in the last three years. “Governments were changed because of corruption. The common people hated this… There has been not a single blot on our government in the past three years. And governance is being modified so that honesty becomes an in-build process,” leading news agency IANS quoted PM as saying.

Talking about surgial strike against the terrorist launchpads in Pakistan last year, the Prime Minsiter said that no country has questioned India’s surgical strike and we have been succeeded in telling the world about the need to uproot the menace of terrorism.

“The entire world could have raised many questions and pointed fingers at us for the surgical strike. But, not a single country questioned India’s surgical strike against the terrorist launchpads in Pakistan (last year). Those who suffered (Pakistan) because of this, is a different thing,” Modi said.

Indian diaspora hails PM Modi: 

The Indian diaspora in the United States showered praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his comprehensive speech as he addressed them and said his efforts to make a better India are praiseworthy.

Praising Modi’s speech at the Indian Diaspora, an Indian expat said, “Prime Minister Modi’s speech was comprehensive as he talked about India’s development in various spheres and what his government has accomplished in the last three years. He understands the needs of the people and hence, touches the hearts of the people.”

PM lauds Sushma Swaraj in US: 

While interacting with Indian disapora, Modi showered praise on External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and said,”The way Sushma Swaraj has worked and helped every Indian abroad is commendable. It is now well known in India that when anyone in trouble tweets to Sushma, she promptly replies and the government takes prompt action.”

“India’s MEA has touched new heights frm point of view of humanity. 80,000 Indians in distrss rescued from diff parts of world in 3 years,”PM said yesterday.

What will happen today? 

Prime Minister Modi will today meet United States President Donald Trump and would be the first world leader to have a working dinner with the latter at the White House. Both the leaders are expected to spend nearly five hours in their maiden bilateral meeting which is reportedly aimed at establishing new priority areas in the Indo-US cooperation.

Here’s the complete schedule: 

At around 3:30 PM, the Modi and Trump will first have one-on-one talks, followed by short photo-op with media. Reportedly, the one-on-one talk between the two leaders may last longer than an hour. The talk is intended to allow them to get to know each other.

After that delegation-level talk is planned during which the two sides represented by top officials will raise important issues which include terrorism, H-1B Visa system. As per the reports, the American side would be represented by top leaders including the Vice President Mike Pence, the National Security Advisor, Lt. Gen. H R McMaster, and the Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, Defense Secretary James Mattis, the Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, and the Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

The day will conclude with a White House dinner. US President Donald Trump would host Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a working dinner at the White House, the first of its kind under this administration.
