National Sports Day: PV Sindhu, Sakshi Malik, Dipa Karmakar and Jitu Rai conferred with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award
Bishweshwar Nandi (Coach of Dipa Karmakar) and Raj Kumar Sharma (Coach of Virat Kohli and Ishant Sharma) were conferred with Dronacharya Award by President Pranab Mukherjee.
New Delhi, Aug 29: President Pranab Mukherjee, on National Sports Day, presented national sports awards like Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award and Dronacharya Award to sports personalities who achieved success on various international events. Rio Olympics silver medallist PV Sindhu, bronze medalist Sakshi Malik, gymnast Dipa Karmakar and shooter Jitu Rai have been conferred with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award on the National Sports Day. PV Sindhu has won silver medal in women’s single badminton competition at Rio Olympics 2016, while Sakshi Malik clinched bronze medal in wrestling.
Bishweshwar Nandi (Coach of Dipa Karmakar) and Raj Kumar Sharma (Coach of Virat Kohli and Ishant Sharma) were conferred with Dronacharya Award by President Pranab Mukherjee. Lalita Shivaji Babar, Subrata Paul, Raghunath V.R were given Arjuna Award for athletics, football and hockey respectively. Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who was injured during her second match at Rio Olympics 2016 in 48 kg women’s freestyle category, also received Arjuna Award from the President. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on National Sports Day, has congratulated all sports lovers across India and has expressed hope that sports and sportsmanship will always shine in our society. “On National Sports Day I congratulate all sports lovers across India and hope sports and sportsmanship will always shine in our society,” the Prime Minister said.
While shuttler Sindhu created history by becoming the first female athlete from India to win a silver in the just-concluded Rio Olympics, Sakshi bagged a bronze in the 58kg female wrestling. Dipa, India’s first female gymnast to qualify for Olympics, went on to miss a bronze by 0.15 points but her clean finish in the high-risk Produnova vault won the hearts of the nation, while Jitu bagged over half a dozen medals in the past two years, including gold at Asiad and Commonwealth Games and a silver in World Championships, which booked his ticket to Rio.
The Arjuna Award is given for consistent performance over four years, while the Dronacharya Award is given to coaches for producing medal winners at prestigious international sports events. The Khel Ratna Award is given for spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson over a period of four years.

Dronacharya Awards 2016: Nagapuri Ramesh (athletics), Sagar Mal Dhayal (boxing), Raj Kumar Sharma (cricket), Bishweshwar Nandi (gymnastics), S Pradeep Kumar (swimming, lifetime) and Mahabir Singh (wrestling, lifetime). Arjuna Awards 2016: Rajat Chauhan (archery), Lalita Babar (athletics), Sourav Kothari (billiards and snooker), Shiva Thapa (boxing), Ajinkya Rahane (cricket), Subrata Paul (football), Rani (hockey), VR Raghunath (hockey), Gurpreet Singh (shooting), Apurvi Chandela (shooting), Soumyajit Ghosh (table tennis), Vinesh (wrestling), Amit Kumar (wrestling), Sandeep Singh Mann (para-athletics), Virender Singh (wrestling, deaf). Dhyan Chand Award: Satti Geetha (athletics), Sylvanus Dung Dung (hockey), Rajendra Pralhad Shelke (rowing).
