MCD Elections 2017

New Delhi, April 26: The counting for the 104 wards of North Delhi Municipal Corporation will begin at 8 A.M today after the residents of the north Delhi cast their votes on April 23. North Delhi Municipal Corporation is witnessing a fierce battle for the power with all major political parties have put in their efforts to clinch the victory. While the Bharatiya Janta Party is trying hard to ensure third consecutive term in the house, the Aam Aadmi party is under pressure to repeat its impressive performance in assembly polls of 2015. Aam Aadmi Party won the assembly with a brute majority decimating all opposition parties.

However, the party has been in the controversies ranging from the allegations of tampering of electronic voting machines to the constant tussle with Delhi State Election Commission. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday had said that he is ready to begin movement if the party does not get the desired results. He further accused that the exit polls with a huge mandate for the Bharatiya Janta Party have been floated to cover the tampering of EVMs. Delhi High Court has already rejected the plea of the party to conduct elections with Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail enabled EVMs. [Also read:MCD Election Results 2017 LIVE News Updates]

Bharatiya Janta Party seemed confident of securing victory in the civic polls. In the previous elections, the saffron party swept the civic polls by winning 59 out 104 wards of North Delhi Municipal Corporation. Congress remained second by winning only 29 wards. The party is expecting better results after an improved performance in Rajouri Garden assembly by-poll. Congress candidate Meenakshi Chandela remained at the second position leaving by the Aam Aadmi Party candidate Harjeet Singh who lost his deposit.

The grand old party has been deserted by many leaders ahead of civic polls. Arvinder Singh Lovely, former education minister in Sheila Dikshit government along with Amit Malik joined the Bharatiya Janta Party. The list grew with the resignation of Barkha Shukla Singh who raised questions over the leadership credentials of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Congress Chief Ajay Maken. She alleged that Rahul Gandhi has failed to address the grievances of common party workers regarding the functioning style of Ajay Maken. She too joined the Bharatiya Janta Party.
