New Reveal - Headey was a rogue American agentWas sent to spy on the LeT
David Coleman Headley, the LeT operative who was nabbed by the FBI last month and is being milked for details seems like a spy straight out of a Fredrick Forsyth novel. According to a new reveal, Headley was originally a US undercover agent, a mole stationed at the LeT who was assigned to leak info to the FBI. As he delved deep into the Laskhar operations, Headley switched to the other side and became a rogue American agent, carrying out operations for the bad guys. James Cameron's 'Avatar' has a similar plotline, where a US marine joins the N'avi race to fight for their freedom. To add to the drama, the new reports reveal that Headley even provided some useful info to American intelligence agencies that prevented an LeT attack on Mumbai in September 2008. Although he continued to tip off his American handlers, Headley was committed fully to the LeT - which explains why he did not alert the FBI regarding an impending attack in Mumbai on the 26/11. The genesis of the Headley’s tryst with US intelligence was recently revelead in a NY Times report. According to the report, in 1998 Headley was convicted of conspiring to smuggle heroin into US from Pakistan. The new York times report says, 'Court records show that after his arrest, he provided so much information about his own involvement with drug trafficking which stretched back more than a decade and about his Pakistani suppliers that he was sentenced to less than two years in jail and later went to Pakistan to conduct undercover surveillance operations for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).' That clearly indicates that the US authorities let Healdey go in return for some cooperation. According to the FBI, Dawood Gilani changed his name to Headley to avoid his history as a drug smuggler. It also gave him freedom to travel undetected. He has confessed that he joined the LeT in 2006 and was given training from various terror groups in Pakistan. November 26, 2009
