Highlights

  • Sitharaman will review India's only tri- services command's operational preparedness and related issues.
  • The Defence Minister would also be visiting the operational area of the command and Car Nicobar Air Force Station.

“On her maiden visit to the command, she will be celebrating Diwali with troops and interacting with the families during various events over the two days,” the defence ministry was quoted as saying in a The Press Trust of India report.

If reports are to be believed, the Defence Minister would also be visiting the operational area of the command and Car Nicobar Air Force Station and lay wreaths at the Swatantra Jyoti in the Cellular Jail and the Tsunami memorial in Car Nicobar.

As part of the defence reforms undertaken after the 1999 Kargil conflict, the Andaman and Nicobar Command was established as a unified command in October 2001. The command also provides security cover to India’s 5.95 lakh sq km of Exclusive Economic Zone in the region.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to celebrate Diwali with Army and Indian-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) soldiers at the China border. As per sources, he will also visit Kedarnath on October 20.

After assuming office in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated his first Diwali with soldiers in Siachen.

PM Modi had celebrated last Diwali with soldiers in a remote village near China border in Himachal Pradesh. He also made an unscheduled stop at a village, Chango, and spent some time with the locals.
