New Delhi, March 20: Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy has raise questions over claims made by two Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia Dargah clerics who returned to India from Pakistan on Monday. Swamy claimed that the two clerics are working against the country. Speaking to news agency ANI, Swamy said, “The two are lying. If two terrorists come and say, they were being called RAW agents in Pakistan, will we believe them? We have information that the two of them are working against the country.”
Swami’s explosive allegations came after Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia Dargah head cleric Syed Asif Ali Nizami and his nephew Nazim Nizami returned safely to India on Monday morning, days after they had gone missing in Pakistan. The two have claimed that there were detained by Pakistani intelligence agencies after some media reports in Pakistan called them RAW agents. “There is a newspaper Ummat (in Pakistan) which has printed false statements (of the two clerics being RAW spies) and photos,” Nazim Nizami was quoted as saying by ANI.
The two Sufi clerics landed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi on Monday morning and went straight to Nizamuddin Dargah with their family. They offered prayers at the Dargah shortly after returning and also met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj later.
The two clerics had gone missing in Karachi in Pakistan on March 15 and the matter was taken up by the External Affairs Committee with the Nawaz Sharif government. They had gone to Lahore on March 8 to see Syed Nizami’s elder sister in Karachi. During the visit, they offered chaadars at two dargahs in Lahore on March 14 and were scheduled to return to Karachi on March 15. It was reported that they had gone missing from Karachi airport. There were also some reports stating that the two had been detained, but they were refuted by Pakistan.
Pakistan had conveyed to India that the clerics were traced and reached Karachi on Sunday evening. According to Pakistani media reports, both clerics had been in interior Sindh where there was no communication network and that is why they could not inform their family about their whereabouts. Sushma Swaraj had on Sunday tweeted, “I just spoke to Syed Nazim Ali Nizami in Karachi. He told me that they are safe and will be back in Delhi tomorrow.”
With Swamy making such allegations against the clerics, it remains to be seen what comes out of their meeting with Sushma Swaraj.
