New Delhi, Mar 24: Kathak exponent Pandit Birju Maharaj has expressed grief over the death of Class IX girl who committed suicide by hanging herself from ceiling fan at her residence in Noida on Tuesday evening (March 20) after being ‘harassed’ by two teachers of Ahlcon Public School, Mayur Vihar (Phase 1). He also demanded handing over the matter to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for probe. “It is a big loss, that girl would have become a big star in the future. If no conclusion comes out from the police investigation, the matter should be referred to CBI,” he said. Reportedly, the girl used to learn kathak from Birju Maharaj.
Earlier on Thursday (March 22), the police had recovered a notebook of the 15-year-old school girl in which she had scribbled, “I am dumb. I am failure”, “I hate myself“. The family of the victim confirmed that it was her handwriting.
On the same day, the principal of the school had issued a statement rejecting the ‘harassment’ allegations levelled against two school teachers by the family of the girl. Such a thing never happened, he said. “One of the teachers against whom allegations are being made is a woman. How can she sexually harass someone? The other teacher has been here for 25 years & we never got any such complaint,” he asserted.
He added, “The school mourns her death & we are with the family. If I see her record she was an average student, not very good at studies but a great dancer. Students’ marks are given at PTMs but her parents didn’t attend any. She didn’t fail, had to give re-test.”
The parents of the girl, along with friends and relatives, protested outside the school demanding a CBI inquiry into the matter. The victim’s father said that if his daughter didn’t get justice, he would commit suicide.
The police on Wednesday morning registered an FIR under sections 306 & 506 IPC & POCSO Act in the case.
The Class IX girl allegedly committed suicide at her home in Noida on Tuesday evening. Her family members allege the 15-year-old took the extreme step due to low marks and harassment by teachers. Alleging that she was under ‘extreme pressure’ from teachers, her father said, “She told me her SST teachers touch her inappropriately, I said since I’m also a teacher I can say they can’t do it,might be a mistake but she said, ‘I’m scared of them, no matter how well I write they’ll fail me.’ Ultimately they failed her in SST. School killed her.”
