Bhubaneshwar, September 8: One student died and 35 others were injured after a wall adjacent to school premises collapsed on Thursday afternoon. According to reports, the incident happened in Saraswati Shishu Mandir School which is located at Satyabadi area, in Puri district of Odisha. According to news agency ANI, among 35 injured 20 school students were critical and are admitted to a local hospital in Puri.
The incident took place on Thursday afternoon when class VIII students of Saraswati Shishu Mandir were studying in their dilapidated classroom. The dilapidated wall of the classroom collapsed following which students were trapped under debris. Following the incident the school authorities rushed to the spot and the injured kids were first taken to Satyabadi hospital and later shifted to Capital hospital in Bhubaneshwar.
One of the girl student Minakshi Satpathy a class VIII student of the school succumbed to her injuries. After the incident was reported, Odisha’s School and Mass Education department minister Debi Prasad Mishra visited Capital hospital to meet the injured students. Local area MLA and Police Superintendent were also present at the spot. The school has been closed for today and fire brigade officials and local municipal officers are ordered to conduct a survey of the school structure. The family members of injured held school authorities responsible for the accident. One of the family members of the victim said that the school authorities must be booked for negligence.
Meanwhile, collector of Puri has asked the DEO to probe the incident and declared that the district administration will bear all expenses of treatment of injured kids. School authorities had not yet given any statement on this issue.
