Polling for the second phase of Odisha Panchayat elections was held in 174 Zilla Parishad constituencies spread across 29 districts except Deogarh today. The first phase of the panchayat polls was held on February 13. The voting was conducted at 18,581 wards of 1,386 panchayats in the second phase. The poll witnessed about 71 per cent voter turnout across the state in the first phase of panchayat polls. In the first phase of Odisha panchayat elections, a total of 188 Zilla Parishad seats were contested. At least 71 per cent of the 58,28,446 voters exercised their franchise. Biju Janata Dal (BJD) claimed to win 96 seats in the first phase of polls. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also claimed to have won 73 seats in the panchayat polls.
The five-phase Panchayat elections began in Odisha on Monday. In the 2012 Odisha Panchayat polls, the BJD had grabbed the highest 651 seats out of the total 851 Zilla Parishad seats, while Congress got 126 seats. The BJP had got third position with 36 seats. The remaining seats went to JMM (11), CPI (2), CPI (M) 1 and independent (22). The official Odisha Panchayat election results 2017 will be declared on February 25.
