New Delhi, September 14: OP Jindal University in Sonepat and Kongu Arts and Science College, Tamil Nadu, have topped the chart in Swachhta Rankings of Higher Educational Institutions, the Ministry of Human Resources Development announced on Thursday. HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said that as no government institution could grab a spot in top 50, the ministry had to create a separate category for them.
Among government institutions, GB Pant University topped the chart. Madurai Kamraj University, Alagappa University, Tamil Nadu, and National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur, secured second, third and fourth rank in government institutions category respectively.
The Ministry said 3500 institutions participated in the Swachhta Rankings out of which best 25 institutions were selected in four categories for awards. One of the most important criteria was the student/toilet ratio along with a running water supply for at least 15 hours.
Manipal University in Jaipur got second position under the university category. Vidya Pratishthans from Pune secured second place in the college category.
Amritha Vishwa Vidyapeethan bagged first place in technology university category.
A team from the ministry visited the institutes in August to assess the claims made by them and accord rankings subsequently.
The factors enlisted upon which the ranking was done include availability of toilets in hostels and academic buildings, their maintenance and water facility, garbage clearance in campus and its disposal, use of any innovative technology for solid and liquid waste management, and green coverage of the campus.
