Panvel City Municipal Corporation elections 2017: All you need to know

Maharashtra, May 18: The maiden elections for the Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will be held on May 24 after it came into existence in October last year. The civic poll is scheduled for two other civic bodies-Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation and Malegaon Municipal corporations on the same day. Major parties such as BJP, Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP are all set for the civic polls. While BJP leaders are in no mood to relax after its landslide triumph in BMC elections 2017 and Congress are campaigning hard to win PCMC elections 2017.

It’s just a few days left for the Panvel civic polls and the major political parties have submitted their nominations for the Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) elections on May 6 which was the last day of filing nominations. PCMC civic polls will witness a triangular contest between Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena. On the last day, 512 candidates will submit their nominations taking the total to 636.

The PCMC has 20 wards in which they have 78 corporators. BJP is contesting from 75 seats with it’s alliance RPI(A) in two seats and PRP in one. Similarly, Congress is contesting on 18 seats and its alliance PWP is contesting from 48 seats, and NCP from 12 seats. The Shiv Sena is contesting on 68 seats, while it’s partner Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghthana is contesting on 5 seats.

The ballot papers for PCMC arrived from government printing press in Chandigarh. There are around 600 EVMs for the 570 polling booths for Panvel civic polls. Reportedly, more than one EVM machine will be there in five to six wards due to a large number of candidates. PCMC has overall 20 wards and 78 seats in which 18 wards have to elect four candidates each, while two wards will elect three candidates each. Maharashtra State Election Commission has appointed 350 staff for door-door delivery of voter slips to nearly 4.25 lakh voters. They have delivered some 50-60% letters and the remaining will be delivered by Friday. The letters will have the details of the voters’ name, a serial number which will help the voters to identify the designated polling booth.

It’s just few days left for the Panvel civic polls and the high voltage drama has started in 78 wards across Panvel old city including Kharghar, Kamothe, Kalmboli, New Panvel, Taloja and 29 adjoining villages and many places under the civic body. The campaigning of all major political parties in the Panvel civic polls has reached to it’s  peak.  The political parties are offering free fuel, biryani, snacks, cold drinks and even alcohol, besides a decent daily allowance for the campaigning.
