New Delhi, Dec 9: With only four working days of Winter Session of Parliament remaining, the demand of conducting a debate on demonetisation has intensified. Reports claim that Opposition, which had been demanding a debate under rule 184 or rule 193 (which necessitates voting), may soften its stand and indulge in a regular discussion with the government. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not expected to speak on demonetisation today in the Parliament. According to sources linked to NDTV, Modi would be speaking in the House on Wednesday.

If the debate gets initiated in the Parliament, Government may likely succeed in training its guns at the Opposition in Lok Sabha, where the the numbers are in their favour. However, in Rajya Sabha, the Government would remain outnumbered, allowing Opposition to overpower them.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) took a jibe at the Government earlier in the day over the disruptions in the House. Party’s Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien was quoted as saying by NDTV that if the government cannot run the house, they should take cue from us.

Leaders of various Opposition parties met Speaker Sumitra Mahajan before the proceedings began, news agency ANI reported. According to NDTV, there is a strong possibility that Opposition changes its strategy today and indulged in a debate, under rules laid down by the Government.

On Thursday, both the Houses of Parliament functioned in a staggered manner. While Rajya Sabha was adjourned with no business proceedings, Lok Sabha witnessed some action. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley spoke in the Lower House, despite heavy sloganeering by the Opposition benches.
