Pathankot terror attack: Pakistan gives clean chit to JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar

New Delhi/Islamabad, Feb 8: In a latest development in the Pathankot terror attack investigation, a team, constituted by Pakistan government to probe the strike, gave clean chit to Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Maulana Masood Azhar. The team, which was formed by Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, found no substantive evidence against Masood Azhar, which suggest his involvement in the Pathankot attack.

After Pathankot attack, Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the ‘leads’ given by India. The team was also expected to visit India to study the evidence the Indians have. After initial probe, the SIT said that it hasn’t found substantive evidence against Masood Azhar so far. The Pakistan NSA Lt-Gen (retd) Nasser Khan Janjua also conveyed the report to his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval. Earlier, Pakistan government dismissed India’s proposal to jointly interrogate Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Maulana Masood Azhar and other suspects arrested in the case. The detention of Maulana Masood Azhar in connection with Pathankot attack also remained unclear. Initially, reports came that Pakistan held him in ‘protective custody’, detained several JeM members and sealed their office. Later officials of intelligence claimed that JeM chief has not been arrested nor has he been put under house arrest while three of his junior functionaries were detained in cases not connected with the Pathankot terror attack.

India has given key information about certain mobile numbers which were used by the handlers of the six terrorists who stormed the sensitive air base in Punjab. Six JeM terrorists attacked Indian Air Force Base in Pathankot. After hours long gun-battle, security forces neutralised all six terrorists. Seven security personnel were also killed in the counter-terror operation.
