Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi chairs NITI Aayog’s Governing Council meeting

In the meeting, a presentation will be presented by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Arvind Panagariya outlining key aspects of the rapid transformation of the country.

New Delhi, Apr 23: With the aim of sharing the 15-year Vision Document with the Chief Ministers to accelerate the country’s economic development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is chairing the third meeting of the governing council of NITI Aayog at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The meeting is expected to continue for over six hours with more than 25 chief ministers focusing on big changes planned for the development in the future. The governing council will be meeting today after a gap of 21 months.

In the meeting, a presentation will be presented by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Arvind Panagariya outlining key aspects of the rapid transformation of the country. Apart from the Vice Chairman if NITI Aayog, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will also address the governing council on the strategy of doubling farmer’s income.

The other important issues to be discussed in the meeting today includes the progress made by the state government for the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) from July 1 and the meeting will also discuss the action taken on the decisions made in the two NITI Aayog meeting previously held.

“During the meeting, action taken on decisions of the earlier two meetings of the Governing Council held on February 8, 2015, and July 15, 2015, respectively will be discussed in detail,” the official statement read.

Informing about the NITI Aayog meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted stating, “Will chair the 3rd meeting of the @NITIAayog Governing Council tomorrow. Looking forward to wide-ranging discussions on key policy issues.”

While chief ministers of all states are a part of the NITI Aayog, it is been reported that some non-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) CM are expected to skip the meeting. Reports suggest that West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal may give meeting a miss. The ministers of the respective states will be representing their chief ministers.

In the first meeting of the NITI Aayog, the Governing Council laid down key mandates which included fostering cooperative federalism by addressing national issues through mutual cooperation between the Centre and States and monitoring important central schemes. Whereas, in the second meeting, the Governing Council outlined the progress made by three Sub-Groups of Chief Ministers.
