Pranab Mukherjee Will Get a Pension of Rs 75,000 as Former President: A Look at Other Privileges

A fully furnished residence, free travel and more. Here are the privileges that the former presidents of India are eligible for.

New Delhi, July 24: President Pranab Mukherjee, who demits office on Tuesday, will now go on to enjoy the privileges of a former President, that is, a pension of RS 75,000 along with other such benefits. Mukherjee will be moving out of the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday and will be moving to another residence at Rajaji Road. Besides the Rs 75,000 per month as pension, he is also eligible to get office expenses up to Rs 60,000 per annum. Pranab Mukherjee’s salary as President was Rs 1,50,000 per month. His pension as former President will be 50 per cent of the current salary, as has been prescribed for the former first citizen.

Not just that, the former President of the country is also eligible to a furnished residence without payment of rent, two telephones, one mobile phone with national roaming facility and a motor-car, free of charge or to such car allowance as may be specified in the rules under the President Emoluments Act. The maintenance of the new residence will also be included in this.

Besides this, Pranab Mukherjee as former President will also be eligible for free medical treatment across the country and also free travel with one person accompanying him in highest class by air, rail or steamer.

Pranab Mukherjee’s new home will be the same as that of late former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. The new residence, 10 Rajaji Road, is an eight-room, two-storey villa spread over an expansive 11,776 sq feet. The walls and furniture have been redone. Pranab Mukherjee will also have access to secretarial staff consisting of a private secretary, one additional private secretary , one personal assistant, two peons.

Mukherjee is set to address the nation for the final time as President on Monday evening at 7:30 pm. He will be demitting office at 12:25 pm on Tuesday, handing over the guard to Ram Nath Kovind who will be sworn in as the 14th President of India.
