Thane, April 9: A pregnant woman lost her unborn child after the ambulance she was travelling in hit a divider in Thane on early Sunday morning. Tankila Ahmed was travelling in the ambulance along with her family to JJ Hospital, when the vehicle turned turtle and hit the divider near the Anand Nagar toll plaza. The woman and her family sustained injuries and the former is presently in a critical condition. Doctors at the Sion Hospital said, “We couldn’t save her baby. Her condition is critical and we are monitoring her minutely.” The hospital authorities said that they were waiting for the patient to stabilize for removing the foetus out of the woman’s body.

At least four family members of the woman got injured in the accident which included her husband, mother-in-law, her father and her nephew. The driver Shakur Rashid Beg also sustained injuries. All the injured people however remained stable and were receiving treatment at the same hospital.

The incident took place at 7 am on Sunday. Ahmed’s husband said he heard a massive crash and blanked out suddenly. Later, he saw the seat of the ambulance atop his wife. Till then, Ahmed said that his wife had become unconscious. People called for the fire brigade and police rushed to the spot after receiving the tragic news. The police evacuated all the people who were trapped in the vehicle.

Meanwhile, Thane police booked the driver for rash and negligent driving causing grievous harm.
