New Delhi, Apr 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the Congress always insulted Dalit icon, BR Ambedkar. He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the Ambedkar memorial in the national capital. The PM said the Jawaharlal Nehru government had ignored Ambedkar and forced him to resign from the cabinet.
“Congress used all its power to remove any mention of Baba Saheb from the country’s history. This is the bitter truth of history that when Baba Saheb was alive, Congress left no stone unturned to insult him,” the Prime Minister said.
He said that Ambedkar had resigned from the Cabinet during Jawaharlal Nehru’s tenure as he was not made part of any Cabinet committee. He said that Ambedkar was not even given a proper mention in the books.
He said when Ambedkar had contested Lok Sabha elections, the Congress had put its full weight behind in defeating him. He added that former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru had campaigned against him.
He said chanting ‘Baba Saheb’s’ name is a compulsion for Congress as it intends to win elections.
He further said that the Congress never wanted that Dalits and backward classes come into the mainstream. He accused the Congress of spreading lies on the reservation.
“I challenge the Congress to tell about a single work done by them for Baba Saheb, any single work done by them as a mark of respect to him,” he added.
Breaking silence on Kathua and Unnao rapes, he said,”Incidents being discussed since past two days cannot be part of a civilised society. As a country, as a society, we all are ashamed of it. I want to assure the country that no culprit will be spared, complete justice will be done. Our daughters will definitely get justice.”
