New Delhi, Jan 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday greeted the nation on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Magh Bihu and Uttarayan. (ALSO READ – Celebrate Makar Sankranti by Making Delicious Surti Undhiyu and Peanut Chikki)

Wishing Makar Sankranti to citizens, PM Modi tweeted in Hindi. “Makar Sankranti ke paawan avsar par sabhi desh vasiyon ko dheron badhayi (Greetings on the occasion of Makar Sankranti),” he posted. (ALSO READ – Celebrate Pongal by Making Delicious Chettinad Special Pongal Kuzhambu)

In three other tweets, he extended Pongal, Magh Bihu and Uttarayan greetings to all.

On the other hand, President of India prayed for the joy, health and happiness for all on the occasion. “Greetings to all fellow citizens on Makar Sankranti and Pongal. These festivals are a moment to celebrate the hard work and enterprise of millions of our farmers. May this day bring joy, health and happiness to all #PresidentKovind,” he tweeted. 

Makar Sankranti is a festival which is devoted and dedicated to the sun god, Surya. This holy festival is also known as the phase of transition, as from now onwards days will start becoming longer and nights will become shorter. The main reason to celebrate Makar Sankranti is to celebrate the harvest season. The festivities associated with Makar Sankranti are known by various names such as Magh Bihu by Assamese Hindus and Pongal by Tamil Hindus.
