Raebareli, Feb 17: Congress’ star campaigner Priyanka Gandhi addressed her first election rally in Uttar Pradesh, campaigning alongside her brother Rahul Gandhi. Launching a blistering attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Priyanka said, “He (Modi) says that UP should adopt him and give one chance for development. But I want to ask him, why UP needs to adopt an outsider? Does he think someone from UP is not capable to develop the state?”
Priyanka also accused the Prime Minister of making false claims of development. “When you (Modi) came in 2014, you said Varanasi would be changed. Varanasi would be transformed. But what has happened? There is no change. Conditions have deteriorated instead.”
Reiterating the charges levelled by Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi against Modi, Priyanka said, “Demonetisation has caused immense pain to the poor. Who has been targeted through demonetisation? Certainly not the black money hoarders. The people who have suffered are farmers, labourers, daily wage earners and the common man.”
Priyanka appealed the electorate of Uttar Pradesh to vote for a young leadership. “Youth of Uttar Pradesh needs a government that understands their aspirations. Congress and SP alliance would ensure the empowerment of every son and daughter of UP.”
“PM Modi is offering UP more and more rhetoric. Would empty rhetoric solve the issues of people of UP?” Priyanka further remarked.
Before Priyanka, Rahul launched a scathing attack against the Prime Minister, accusing him of befooling the farmers of Uttar Pradesh. “When I met Modi ji in the Parliament, urging him to waive off the farm loans as farmers, as they are under distressed condition across the nation. Modi ji smiled and heard us. But he took no action. Now he comes to UP and says, that a BJP government, if elected to power, would waive off the pending loans of farmers. There cannot be a bigger lie,” Rahul said.
The rally of Rahul and Priyanka in Raebareli came a day after the Amit Shah addressed a couple of public meetings in Amethi on Thursday. Hitting out at the Gandhi family, Amit Shah had said, “Who are you Rahul baba to seek account from Prime Minister Modi. Your family has ruled this region for past 60 years. You’ll have done nothing for Amethi. The people of Amethi want to know what Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Rahul baba did for this region.”
The elections in Amethi and Raebareli are scheduled in the fourth phase of polls. Elections in the 10 assembly segments of the region would be contested on February 23.
