New Delhi, Sept 15: Congress veteran Veerappa Moily said the time is ripe for Rahul Gandhi to be elevated as the party president. Moily, however, clarified that his elevation to the topmost post of the party would only be conducted through the internal election process.

Highlights

  • Internal election at state-level likely to concluded by end of the month, Moily said.
  • AICC meet likely to be convened next month for holding internal poll at top brass level.
  • The incumbent party president, Sonia Gandhi, is holding the post since 1998.

Moily’s remarks came two days after Rahul, while speaking at the Berkely University in California, said he is “absolutely ready” to takeover as the chief of Congress.

According to Moily, the party cadres from the grassroot level have appealed the Congress leadership to make no more delay in appointing Rahul as the party president.

“Everybody (in Congress) feels it is (his elevation) delayed. Now, he (Rahul) is waiting for organisation elections. He would like to emerge as the president of AICC only out of the election process,” the former Union Minister told PTI.

The internal elections of Congress at state-level are expected to be concluded by the end of the month. The All India Congress Committee, or AICC, would be convened next month to hold election at the top brass level, Moily claimed.

Moily says he expects Rahul to takeover the coveted post by “possibly next month”.

On being asked how the 48-year-old would able to boost the prospects of the party, the senior leader said he would bring a “new approach”. According to him, one of the foremost tasks which Rahul should take upon after assuming control, is the appointment of new Congress in-charge of all states.

“We will have to address the issues in respect of each of the state, because each state is different from the rest. So, that requires state-wise strategies not only for the coming state elections but also parliamentary polls in 2019,” he added.

The incumbent Congress president is Sonia Gandhi, who had assumed the charge in 1998. Rahul, her son, was appointed as the party vice president in 2013.
