Rahul Gandhi talks about women’s safety again, but what did UPA do about it?
Congress leaders are talking about women's empowerment and safety, but have they forgotten that brutal incidents like the Delhi gangrape and the Shakti Mills gangrape in Mumbai happened in their tenure?
On the occasion of the 70th birth anniversary of late prime minister of India Rajiv Gandhi, addressing Mahila Congress workers at the Congress Sankalp Sammelan, the party vice president Rahul Gandhi stressed again on women’s empowerment and asked women to raise voice against suppression. Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi said that “big people” say that rapes are shameful but what is required is that they should change their mindset.
Criticising the NDA government, Rahul Gandhi said, “This government’s perception is that women should be worshipped and not empowered. But our mindset is different, we want to empower women because we believe in them.”
Congress president Sonia Gandhi, making a strong pitch for women’s reservation in Parliament said that Congress would put full pressure on the NDA government to pass the bill. This was the first large gathering of Congress party workers after a disastrous performance in recent Lok Sabha elections.
But it seems that the Congress did not learn anything from their defeat. Congress leaders are talking about women’s empowerment and safety, but have they forgotten that brutal incidents like the Delhi gangrape and the Shakti Mills gangrape in Mumbai happened in their tenure? During the Congress ‘Raj’, Delhi became the most unsafe place for women.
Apart from women’s safety, corruption, scams and scam-tainted ministers became the soul reason for the Congress’ defeat. But still the Congress leadership has nothing to say or do on the issue. From the 2G scam to Adarsh Society scam, Congress ministers were reportedly found involved.
The Congress-led UPA government failed to control inflation and price hike too. Congress’ failure to provide safety to women and to curtail corruption primarily led to its debacle.
The Congress and Rahul do not seem to have recovered from the concussion they suffered. Congress, by its misrule and uncontrolled corruption, played the biggest role in BJP’s victory.
