New Delhi, Oct 12: Rahul Gandhi is set to take over the reins of the Indian National Congress (INC) from his mother Sonia Gandhi after Diwali and reports have it that he is likely to be elevated unopposed. Sonia Gandhi too has been an unopposed Congress chief for last 19 years. The party, according to the sources, have started wrapping up the process and work to select the state chiefs, members of central bodies and the president. Sonia Gandhi is likely to call a meeting after Diwali, October 19.
Earlier this week, taking a purported jibe at the leadership, senior leader Mani Shankar Aiyar said, “Only two people can be Congress president, mother or son.” “Rahul has said openly that he is ready to contest elections. But if nobody is found only and if there is only one contestant, then how can there be elections,” he added.
After being formally elected, Rahul Gandhi is also likely to name his new team. However, he may wait till the crucial Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly elections later this year. (Also Read: On Job Front, Congress Failed, But Modi Committed Disaster: Rahul Gandhi)
On a trip to the United States of America, last month, Rahul Gandhi had said that he is ready to lead the Congress party. The new Congress Working Committee or CWC will be up before the before the next batch of assembly elections next year or before the 2019 national elections. Congress had managed to win only 44 parliament seats, which was its lowest by far.
On October 10, the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee (RPCC) passed three resolutions, including the one which said Rahul Gandhi be made the party’s national president. “Congressmen all over India want Rahul Gandhi to take up the reins of Congress party and lead them. Under him, the Congress is resolutely contesting the autocratic BJP government as a strong opposition party,” said RPCC chief Sachin Pilot.
He added that it was an honour for the party that Rahul Gandhi was made Congress vice-president during the party’s ‘Chintan Shivir’ held in Jaipur. “We now want him to accept the Congress president’s post,” Pilot said.
The Congress has also assured the Election Commission that it would complete the internal election process before December.
Sonia Gandhi was elected as the President of the Congress party in 2010. It is supposed to hold elections every three years, but it last held an internal election in 2010. Sonia Gandhi has been the President since then when she was elected the fourth time.
