New Delhi, Nov 14: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi might not become the party president for now as his elevation has been postponed until Gujarat Assembly elections get over. There has not been any indication of the Congress Working Committee meeting taking place in the near future and party leaders say that Rahul‘s coronation might not happen soon as was reported earlier.
There were indications earlier that the Congress scion might take the reins of the party after Diwali and will campaign in Gujarat as the party president. Later, it was speculated that the party may announce the much-awaited decision after Himachal Pradesh polling, but as of now, no indication has come from the top leadership, reported the Times of India.
Some say that Rahul Gandhi may be promoted in between the Gujarat Assembly polls. However, a senior Congress leader told the newspaper that the party may not want to cause distraction for its workers during a tight campaign. Hence, it may take place after the polls.
The Congress party has committed to the Election Commission that it will hold organisational elections by the year end. However, due to the tight election schedule, the internal polling might not happen until Gujarat and Himachal results are announced on December 18. The party may be left with the last 12 days of December to hold internal polls.
