Ramjas violence: Gurmehar Kaur withdraws from her campaign, says ‘this is all my 20-year self could take’
Kargil martyr's daughter Gurmehar Kaur tweeted, "I said what I had to say. I have been through a lot and this is all my 20 year self could take."
New Delhi, Feb 28: Gurmehar Kaur, being trolled for having begun an online campaign against the alleged violence by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), on Tuesday withdrew from the campaign for free speech and said she has had enough. In a tweet early on Tuesday morning, Gurmehar Kaur, the daughter of Kargil martyr Captain Mandeep Singh, said, “I’m withdrawing from the campaign. Congratulations everyone. I request to be left alone. I said what I had to say. I have been through a lot and this is all my 20 year self could take :).”
Even though she won’t be part of the silent protest march organised by the students bodies of the Delhi University, Gurmehar Kaur has appealed to people to join the march on Wednesday. “The campaign is about students and not about me. Please go to the March in huge numbers. Best of luck. To anyone questioning my courage and bravery.. I’ve shown more than enough,” she added.
Gurmehar Kaur said, “One thing is for sure, next time we will think twice before resorting to violence or threats and that’s all this was about.”

The Delhi University will witness a protest march on Tuesday against the violence that played out at Ramjas College last Wednesday. The protest march is likely to see the participation of Jawahar Lal Nehru Students Union. Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti, the student body backed by Aam Aadmi Party, too, has announced that it will be participating in the joint march against the violence in Ramjas College.
Gurmehar Kaur came in the line of fire after she started a campaign against the ABVP following the Ramjas violence. Kaur took to Facebook and posted a picture of her with a placard reading, “I am a student of Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me.” In her subsequent post, Gurmehar revealed that she is the daughter of a Kargil martyr. Earlier this year, Kaur had posted a video and one of the placards of her video had said, “Pakistan did not kill my dad. War did.”
Kaur was trolled on Twitter for her placard. Cricketer Virender Sehwag took to Twitter and posted an image of himself holding a placard saying, “I did not score two triple centuries, my bat did.” Sehwag was backed by actor Randeep Hooda, who later clarified that he was just appreciating the cricketer’s quick wit. Kaur was also compared with Dawood Ibrahim by BJP MP Pratap Simha.
Kaur also alleged that she was receiving rape threats over her campaign and filed a complaint with the Delhi Commission for Women on Monday. However, she added that she wasn’t afraid of the ABVP and that she won’t back down. (Here’s how the whole story played out on Monday)
