New Delhi, March 21: Taking the fight for acquiring more customers in the digital space to its next level, Reliance Jio on Monday complained to Advertising Standards Council of India(ASCI) about Airtel’s claim of officially being India’s fastest network. The letter submitted to the ASCI states that Airtel has made a false, misleading and incorrect statement in its advertisements by declaring itself the fastest network in India.

The telecom giant has accused Airtel of acting in mala fide manner in collusion with Ookla LLC. After grabbing the significant segment of the telecom market, Reliance Jio is leaving no stone unturned for refuting the claims of rivals in the fast changing market. Launched in September last year, Reliance Jio claims that it has already a consumer base of 100 million subscribers.

In its letter to the Advertising watchdog, the Reliance Jio said, “The claim of Airtel that it is India’s fastest network is false, misleading and incorrect. The claim is being made by Airtel acting in a mala fide manner in collusion with Ookla LLC, who profess to be experts in the domain space of testing mobile internet speed.”

Reliance Jio in a separate notice accused Ookla that the company has no accreditations from the government to declare “officially” any service provider the fastest network in India. The letter stated,“Without prejudice to the above, in any event, the way the award is being projected misleads the public into believing that Airtel has the fastest network today, that is when the advertisements are being aired/published.”

Reliance Jio also accused Ookla of charging money from the telecom companies for its services.“It charges money for its services used by telecom companies for their internal consumption, and charges additional consideration” for awarding certificates “that may be used by such companies for external consumption, marketing and publicity”.

“Even in the past, Airtel has been guilty of making attempts to use such titles and proclamations,” the letter states. However, the claim of being India’s fastest network has been defended by the Airtel. Airtel spokesperson said, “Airtel has been rated as India’s fastest mobile network by Ookla — the global leader in broadband testing and web-based network diagnostic applications.

He further said that the company has only reflected the findings of Ookla in its advertisements. Defending Airtel’s position, he said,“This is clearly mentioned in the advertisement. Ookla’s findings are based on analysis of millions of internet speed tests logged on ‘modern devices’ by mobile customers across India using its popular speed test app. The results include all mobile tests, regardless of connection technology.”

Ookla too has defended its findings. Ookla CEO  Jamie Steven in a statement that company’s tool Speedtest has emerged as the market leader in measuring the internet performance. He said that Speedtest has been used by millions of people in measuring the internet performance making it the dominant leader in the field.
