New Delhi, Oct 13: Days after Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi raised question on Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for discriminating women, a senior leader of the right-wing outfit clarified that because of vigorous exercise and a meeting at 6 AM, the RSS does not have women in its shakhas, as  both are not suitable to women.

Condemning Rahul’s remark at a rally in Gujarat where he had asked a gathering of women in Gujarat if they had ever seen a woman wearing shorts in an RSS shakha, senior RSS leader Manmohan Vaidya said that Congress VP’s remarks was like like going to a men’s hockey match and trying to look for women players. “If you want to see women players, you have to go to a women’s hockey match,” Vaidya took a dig at Gandhi.

However, he clarified that RSS only had camps for men this did not mean it didn’t work with females.

“The Rashtra Sevika Samiti, a parallel RSS wing for women  has been working for the last 81 years. Both Sakha and Samiti are designed differently for boys and girls respectively. Rahul Gandhi should have first seen how the Rashtra Sevika Samiti functioned and then commented on it. The samiti takes part in two important annual meetings of the RSS and also participates in the meetings of the Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha (ABPS). The ABPS is the highest body for policy formulation and decision making of the RSS,” Shantakka, the Pramukh Sanchalika of the Rashtra Sevika Samiti told reporters.

On October 9, during his address in Vadodara, the Congress vice-president had received flak by many BJP leaders after he had said “How many women are there in the RSS…. Have you ever seen any woman in the ‘shakhas’ wearing shorts? I have never seen them…In the Congress, you will see women at every level of the organisation.”

“Inka (BJP) main sangathan RSS hai. Kitni mahila hain usme, kabhi shaakha mein mahilaon ko dekha hai shorts mein? Maine to nahi dekha,” said Rahul at a meeting in Akota in poll-bound Gujarat. (Their (BJP’s) main organistaion is RSS. How many women have you seen wearing shorts at shakha. I have never seen.),’ the Gandhi scion had said while addressing a public rally in poll bound Gujarat.
