New Delhi, Apr 11: The Union Government on Wednesday approved the salary hike of Deputy Governors of Union Territories. Hike in minimum pay and allowances of the Lieutenant Governors (LGs) of Union Territories will be implemented from the period starting from January 1, 2016. The increased pay and allowances of the LGs will be at the same rate as applicable to the officers of the rank of Secretary to the government, an official statement said.

The Cabinet was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “The Cabinet has approved the proposal for increasing the pay and allowances of LGs with effect from January 1, 2016 from Rs 80,000 per month plus dearness allowance, sumptuary allowance at the rate of Rs 4,000 per month and local allowances to Rs 2,25,000 plus dearness allowance, sumptuary allowance at the rate of Rs 4,000 per month and local allowances at the same rate as applicable to the officers of the rank of Secretary to the government,” it added.

The statement added that the total emoluments (excluding sumptuary allowance and local allowances) shall not exceed the total emoluments drawn by a Governor, IANS reported. The minimum pay and allowances of the LGs were last increased in the year 2006. The pay was hiked from Rs 26,000 per month to Rs 80,000 per month. It also included dearness allowance, a sumptuary allowance at the rate of Rs 4,000 per month and local allowances.

The minimum pay of officers of the rank of Secretary to the Government of India has also been revised from Rs 80,000 to Rs 2,25,000 per month w.e.f. January 1, 2016.
