SDMC Election Results 2017 News Updates: BJP leads; all pain, no gain for Congress and AAP in South Delhi MCD
LIVE - SDMC Election Results 2017: Here you can find all the latest updates regarding the South MCD Election 2017 Result.
New Delhi, April 26: Counting for the South MCD Election 2017 is over and as per the result declared for this zone of Municipal Corporation of Delhi, also known as South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) BJP has secured leads and wins in 71 wards, while the Indian National Congress (INC) has secured wins in only 11 wards and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has secured 16 wards. Independent and other political parties secured 6 wards. With this figure, the BJP is the clear winner and once again for the third consecutive time, the ‘lotus’ bloomed in MCD.
There are 104 wards in South MCD and the major parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Indian National Congress (INC), the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded their candidates in almost all the wards. For newcomer Swaraj India, it seems they are taking it slow and has fielded candidates in a selective few wards. However, Swaraj India has made sure that they have at least one candidate in each constituency and hence it will be interesting to watch, how does that work out for them. Here you can find all the latest updates regarding the South MCD Election 2017 Result.
Early trends indicate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in SDMC. Although initially Congress showed spike in votes for themselves and it looked as if this is going to be tough for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), but later in the day, AAP managed to secure more wards than Congress, pushing the Congress to third position. However, BJP still managed a huge margin.

In all of this, although apart from those named above, other political parties will contest the MCD Elections 2017, but the prime focus is on the three- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Indian National Congress (INC) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). But if the trend of the 2012 MCD election is to be considered, apart from the parties, there are many independent candidates who might win in wards with a good lead.
The major issues which almost all the political parties have been talking about includes focusing on the unorganised sector of labour. Moreover, there is a growing emphasis on providing trading license and other permits to street vendors. Healthcare, due to annual occurrence of lethal diseases like Dengue and Chikungunya, has also been one issue almost all the parties have mentioned in their manifesto and has promised to take care of.
Party | Wards |
BJP | 71 |
Congress | 12 |
AAP | 15 |
Others | 6 |

In all of this, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which has been in power for consecutive terms has accused the Delhi government of obstructing funds for many MCD projects. In regard to this, they have claimed if they come in power, they will make sure there is a new channel of fund transfer directly from the Centre to the municipal body. The primary question that one must ask looking at the BJP manifesto is if so many tasks are to be done, why were they not done during their prolonged term in the municipal body and it is only now that they realised of the various lacking.
On the other hand, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in an interview a few days back, warned that if the BJP comes in power, the cases of Dengue and Chikungunya deaths will rise, and asked the people of Delhi to not blame him or his Government for that. In this warning, obviously, Kejriwal seems desperate to sway the votes towards his party Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), something similar to what Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati told to her supporters during the campaigning for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections of 2017. And, that did not go well with the people, for her party.
Following the polling on April 23, Sunday, the news channels came up with their opinion polls and fortunately for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), unfortunately for the others, it has been predicted that BJP will win 88 out of the 104 wards in South Delhi. No doubt the South zone has been a strong hold for the BJP, but if the predictions are to be believed, perhaps BJP will win the MCD Elections 2017, again.
