New Delhi, Apr 17: The Delhi Police has filed a chargesheet against four persons who are accused of misbehaving and stalking Union Minister Smriti Irani. The accused have been charge-sheeted under various sections of IPC for stalking Smriti Irani in a state of inebriation.

An FIR under section 354 D (stalking) and section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code was filed against them in April 2017. The students had consumed alcohol at a friend’s birthday party. On their way back home, they started chasing down Smriti Irani’s car.

The Union Minister had first made a PCR call and then lodged a formal complaint with Chanakyapuri Police Station following which the students were detained and later arrested.  The call was received from the minister’s staff that the youths were trying to overtake her vehicle near Moti Bagh flyover and their actions were unwanted.

With the help of PCR van, the car was intercepted near the US Embassy. The accused had tested positive for alcohol during a medical checkup. The four youths, in the age groups of 18-21, are students of Delhi University’s Motilal Nehru College.

They had also apologised for their action and said that they didn’t know that they had overtaken Irani’s car and that they didn’t indulge in any “misbehaviour”. “…whatever happened was in ignorance. We apologise for whatever happened,” one of them had said.
