Judges had to come before media and take this unprecedented step. This means that there is a serious dispute, either with Chief Justice of India (CJI) or some internal dispute: PB Sawant, Former Supreme Court Judge

New Delhi, Jan 12: Amid a tug-of-war between the government and the judiciary over how to appoint judges to various courts of the country, four top most justices of the Supreme Court on Friday came out in the open attacking Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra. In what was witnessed for the first time ever in India, four Justices – J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joesph – appeared before the media explaining their grievances.

The judges also released a letter which they wrote to CJI Dipak Misra a few days ago. (Four Senior-Most Supreme Court Judges’ Letter to CJI Dipak Misra: Full Text)

“This is an extraordinary event in the history of India and the judicial system. For some time, the administration of Supreme Court has not been in order. Less desirable things have happened in the past two months. We thought we had a responsibility as senior judges to place it in front of the country,” said Justice J Chelameswar.

However, the government downplayed the developments saying that it was just an internal matter of the judiciary.
