Surat, September 8: The people at Surat’s address of Amit Shah where the Bharatiya Janata party president had gathered along with several other leaders turned violent and there are reports of massive chaos at the venue. Amit Shah was about to address Patidar rally in Surat on Thursday evening as angry Patels resorted to breaking the chairs and shouted pro-Hardik Patel and anti-Shah slogans.
According to reports, organisers were seen begging to Patel crowd not to leave the rally without eating. The organisers were aware of the devastating consequences ahead of the next year’s assembly polls. According to eyewitness present at the spot, Amit Shah was forced to conclude his speech in just four minutes. Supporters chanted the name of Hardik Patel and vandalised chairs and bottles kept at the venue, NDTV reported.
When Shah was trying to conclude his speech, the crowd chanted “Hardik, Hardik”, while the organisers begged to the crowd to end the programme peacefully. On stage Shah was accompanied by Union Minister Purshottam Rupala who also addressed the crowd. Shah was in Surat to attend a huge rally called by the BJP to honour the new Patel ministers in the government led by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. As soon as the situation went out of control, the police were called in and they physically removed the trouble-makers from the venue. In last one hour, around 10 Patidar leaders who created ruckus at the venue were detained by the police. BJP who left red-faced accused Congress of creating trouble. “The programme went on smoothly, only a handful of unruly elements instigated by the Congress tried to disrupt it,” BJP leader KC Patel was quoted by NDTV.
Hardik Patel, whose name was chanted by the was the face of the agitation that shook Gujarat for over 40 days last year. The 23-year-old Hardik Patel had challenged the BJP government, saying “If you hurt this community, the government will collapse”.
Recently in a Facebook post, he had even issued a challenge to Mr Shah, saying, “I request Amit Shah to stay away from the Patel community’s agitation to get a reservation. We will not stop it just because you want it. The agitation will not stop till I am alive. And if you still want to crush the stir by force, then you will have to kill me.”
