New Delhi, Jan 12: E-commerce giant Amazon has removed a doormat with the Indian flag on its Canada website, after India’s External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj threatened visa ban for its employees. Sushma Swaraj had tweeted,” If this is not done forthwith, we will not grant Indian Visa to any Amazon official. We will also rescind the Visas issued earlier.”
Amazon was caught up in a major controversy after a Twitter user pointed out that the website had been found offering the doormat with the Indian flags for sale. Furious Sushma Swaraj responded immediately and expressed displeasure with the product and asked the site to withdraw all such items insulting the national flag. Further, she had demanded an unconditional apology from Amazon. “Amazon must tender unconditional apology. They must withdraw all products insulting our national flag immediately,” she had said.
She had also asked the Indian High Commission of Canada to take up the issue with the company. Responding to a tweet, Sushma Swaraj asked the Indian High Commission of Canada to take the issue to the highest level. “This is unacceptable. Please take this up with Amazon at the highest level.”
This is not the first time the online store was involved in such an act, earlier in 2016, Amazon was offering doormats of Hindu Gods and after strong protests, Amazon stepped back.
