Thick fog grips Delhi; flight operations, rail services affected

New Delhi, Dec 7: The national capital continued to reel under severe fog conditions as thick blanket of fog continued to envelop the region on Wednesday morning. The intensity of fog is believed to increase in parts of Delhi, Punjab and Haryana during the next 24 to 48 hours. According to MET department, the national capital is likely to witness another spell of dense fog in the second week of December.

Moreover, 8 international flights have been delayed and 3 have been diverted while five domestic flights have also been delayed due to poor visibility. On December 2, the minimum temperature in the national capital was recorded at 11.5 degrees Celsius. The North states of India woke up to the season’s first fog on November 30, 2016 and since then disruption of air, road and rail has taken place. The reason for such dense fog is believed to be due to the Western disturbance (WD), which is expected to move across the western Himalayan region.

As per reports by Skymet Weather, Dense fog continues to abate Delhi-NCR that saw only shallow fog on Tuesday morning. Similar visibility conditions were also witnessed over nearby areas of Punjab and Haryana. As per tweets by ANI, a total of 81 trains are running late this morning and 21 have been rescheduled. Reports also state that 3 trains have been cancelled due to poor visibility caused due to dense fog.

Sky Met reported that several parts of Uttar Pradesh have been since long under the fog blanket and various places such as Lucknow and Bahraich witnessed visibility dropping below 500 meters on Tuesday. As per reports by TOI, the Central Pollution Control Board’s air quality index recorded 389 on Tuesday while the PM 10 levels were at 346 microgram/cubic metre while PM 2.5 levels were 174 microgram/cubic metre that record three times higher than the permitted levels.

As per reports, Jaipur and Lucknow airports have been upgraded to allow planes to land in low-visibility conditions to reduce pressure on Delhi airport where flight operations have been severely disrupted due to low visibility.
