26/11 police dog who stood eight days outside Taj hotel dies of lung infection

Mumbai, July 23: Retired 26/11 dog Tiger who stood for almost eight days near Mumbai terror attack spot died today due to lung infection. The police dog passed away at his retirement home in Virar on Saturday evening.

The black labrador was cremated today at Mumbai with full state honours, his buddy Caesar attended the funeral, news agency ANI reported.

On January 22, Tiger turned 12 and had slowed down a little after his childhood buddy and colleague passed away last month. After his retirement Tiger was taken care by Fizza Shah, an animal activist whose Virar farm home houses fourc 26/11 sniffer dogs – Max, Sultan, Tiger and Ceaser. In May 2016, these four police dogs retired from the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) of Mumbai police. On March 8, Max one of the famous hero dog of 26/11 who saved many lives breathed his last. Since last two months Tiger was suffering through lung infection and was also given a treatment for it. On Friday night his condition had worsened. On Saturday evening he finally died. Tiger was given a dignified burial. PSI Imran Patel, Tiger’s handler and police officials at Goregaon Unit and officials from BDDS placed a tricolour on his body.

Patel reportedly said, “He was on duty outside Taj and showed no signs of tiredness”. At the age of three months Tiger sniffed out a live bomb near Hiranandani Hospital, Powai and at a hutment in Kandivali. According to Shah, the dog used to play with balls at their farmhouse.

At the funeral Caesar sat alongside Tiger’s body and refused to move. Caesar is also ill and is suffering through arthritis, for which he is been given regular treatment. Normally police dogs work for long hours and that too without holiday. Shah feels that a few days off will help them to live longer.
