Jaspal Atwal, who was convicted for trying to kill the then Punjab Minister Malkiat Singh Sidhu in Canada in 1986, was invited to a reception in honour of visiting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He was also spotted in photographs standing with PM Trudeau‘s wife Sophie and Canadian minister Amarjeet Sohi in the Mumbai event.
Earlier today, the High Commission of Canada said that it has rescinded an invitation extended to Jaspal Atwal for the reception. “The High Commission has rescinded Mr Atwal’s invitation,” the mission said in a statement. “We do not comment on matters relating to the PM’s security,” it added.
After receiving backlash over his wife’s photo with Atwal, Justin Trudeau said the matter was being taken “extremely seriously.” “Obviously, we take this extremely seriously. He should never have received an invitation,” the Canadian Prime Minister said in the context of Atwal.
“As soon as we received the info, we rescinded it. A Member of Parliament had included this individual (Atwal),” Trudeau explained. The Prime Minister also said Canada and India were “committed to pursuing and upholding democracy”.
